An Open Letter To My Dad

Father’s Day is approaching. I’m missing you a little more today, Dad. I dreaded so awfully last year not being able to buy you a gift, pick you out a card, or call to express how much I love you. To hear your voice again would be pretty amazing. One thing is for certain though.  I’ll be doing things a little differently this Father’s Day. Instead of sulking, I’ll be celebrating! I’ll be celebrating the man that you were, not the father I thought you should have been at times, and the ways in which I can improve at being a better parent. Mother’s Day

It’s Mother’s Day! It’s a day to celebrate all moms.

Whether you’re a regular mom, an adoptive mom, a foster mom, a brand new mom, a soon-to-be mom, a single mom, a grandmom, a dog or cat mom, a career mom, a stay-at-home mom, a traveling mom, an exhausted mom, a perfect mom, a crunchy mom, a wine mom, a helicopter mom, a free-range mom, a woman hoping to become a mom, or a woman who’s lost a mom, we’re all in this together. This list that describes my mom and mother-in-law is for you.

With all my love, mom and Kathy. Thank you for your unconditional love and for parenting and grand-parenting so well.  Continue reading “Mother’s Day”

Compassion Over Comparison

We undoubtedly live in an image-obsessed culture. I could only imagine that if I was 22 at the present moment and starting a blog, it would perhaps be a fashion or design blog instead. Not that there’s anything wrong with those. Plug into Instagram for a few minutes and hit search and see how many celebrities pop up dressed to impress, looking rather fab just after giving birth with their perfectly done hair and makeup, out for a stroll in their designer heels. I’m not sure how JLo, Kim and Khloe or Christie Brinkley are my target audience, but there they are, looking all amazing and getting millions of accolades in likes that just seems to stir the obsession-with-self pot even further. Author, Sharon Hodde Miller says, “whenever we relinquish our splendor, we fight back against the impossible standards for women. When we lower the bar for women around us, expose our weaknesses instead of keeping up, and humble ourselves instead of competing, that is a gift to our sisters. In an image-obsessed culture like ours, that’s what love looks like.” Continue reading “Compassion Over Comparison”

7 Ways To Fail At Friendship

It’s a beautiful thing to understand another and be understood in such a way that promotes and builds a true and genuine friendship. It allows me the freedom to be exactly who I am and be accepted in a safe and loving space. You know when this type exists and when it doesn’t. I’ve made plenty of mistakes trying to please others at an attempt to win or keep a friendship. Author, Lisa TerKeurst says it best in that, “we must not confuse the command to love with the disease to please.” Cultivating true friendship takes time and requires me to love and be loved.  Not every relationship will go the distance. I mean, if someone treats you poorly, oversteps boundary after boundary or shares information about you that isn’t theirs to share, you wouldn’t exactly stay in that relationship if the behavior continued. So, here’s a few things I’ve learned along the way that can mess up a friendship. Continue reading “7 Ways To Fail At Friendship”
